Welcome to the Corn: It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas (kind of)
It's (almost) the most wonderful time of the year!
Hard to believe that the semester is coming to a close, and with it comes the stress of final exams and --new for me this year -- grading term papers and tabulating final grades.
It doesn't feel like the Christmas, though. Driving home, the weatherman on Power 106.3 (the only good radio station in DeKalb) was exclaiming over the fact that our region of northern Illinois had officially broken every previous December heat wave record Illinois had. It was almost 70 degrees for most of the day!!
Now, I'm not complaining in the least. The roads are clear, I don't freeze my butt off walking to the department building where my office is, and my monthly utility bill is promising to stay quite low given the time of year.
Also I don't have to look like this
But how am I going to feel about winter vacation 2012?
My very first date (that I care to think about anymore, anyway) was ice skating at Rosa Parks Circle in Grand Rapids (pictured above). Rosa Parks Circle gets flooded every winter, and anyone can rent skates (for a very nominal fee) and take advantage of the gorgeous downtown city atmosphere...
not to mention the Christmas tree!!
Isn't it pretty?
I really can't imagine a Christmas season without this gorgeous and fun activity. But naturally we can't have a beautiful outdoor skating rink if we don't start getting some colder weather.
So while I'm enjoying the current heat wave, I'm really hoping that as soon as I head back to the mitten, things start to cool down.
